The perfect morning skincare routine in 5 steps

Your skin is your largest organ and the first thing the world sees of you. Yet many people struggle with the question: what should I actually put on my face every morning? The abundance of products on the shelves can be overwhelming.

The good news? An effective morning routine doesn't need to be complicated. With these 5 steps, you'll lay the perfect foundation for healthy, radiant skin - every single day.

Why a morning routine differs from your evening routine

Before we begin, an important distinction. Your morning routine has a different goal than your evening routine:

  • Morning: Protect, hydrate and prepare for the day
  • Evening: Cleanse, repair and nourish while you sleep

In the morning, it's all about protection. Your skin is exposed to UV radiation, pollution, wind and temperature changes. Your routine needs to prepare your skin for all of that.

Step 1: Cleanse - but gently

You've been sleeping all night, so your skin doesn't need aggressive cleansing. However, a light cleanse is important to remove:

  • Sebum your skin produced overnight
  • Residue from your night cream or serum
  • Dead skin cells that have accumulated

What to use:

  • A mild, pH-neutral cleansing gel or foam
  • Micellar water on a cotton pad for lazy mornings
  • Just lukewarm water if you have very dry or sensitive skin

Avoid: Harsh soap, very hot water, or products with lots of sulphates. These strip your skin of its natural oils.

Tip: Cleanse for a maximum of 60 seconds. Longer isn't necessary and can irritate your skin.

Step 2: Toner - the underrated step

Many people skip the toner, but it's actually a smart intermediate step that elevates your routine:

  • Restores the pH balance of your skin after cleansing
  • Pre-hydrates the upper skin layer
  • Helps improve the absorption of products that follow

What to look for:

  • Toners with hyaluronic acid for hydration
  • Niacinamide toners for pores and blemishes
  • Soothing ingredients like allantoin or panthenol for sensitive skin

Avoid: Toners heavy in alcohol - they dry out your skin instead of hydrating it.

How to apply: Put a few drops in your palms and gently pat onto your face. Don't rub.

Step 3: Serum - your targeted treatment

This is where it gets personal. A serum contains concentrated active ingredients that target specific skin concerns. Choose based on your biggest concern:

  • Vitamin C serum - For a radiant complexion and protection against free radicals. Ideal as a morning serum because it boosts your sun protection
  • Hyaluronic acid serum - For intense hydration. Attracts and locks moisture into your skin
  • Niacinamide serum - For pores, blemishes and an even complexion

How much? A few drops is enough. Serums are concentrated - you need less than you think.

When? Apply the serum to still-damp skin (after your toner). This improves absorption.

Step 4: Moisturiser - lock in the hydration

Your moisturiser does two things: adds extra moisture and forms a protective layer that keeps everything underneath in place.

Choose based on your skin type:

  • Dry skin: Richer cream with ceramides, shea butter or squalane
  • Oily skin: Light gel-cream or oil-free moisturiser
  • Combination skin: Medium texture, perhaps a richer cream only on dry areas
  • Sensitive skin: Fragrance-free, with soothing ingredients like ceramides or oat extract

Pro tip: Wait 1-2 minutes after your serum before applying your moisturiser. This gives the serum time to absorb.

Don't forget your neck! Your facial routine doesn't stop at your jawline. Extend everything down to your décolletage.

Step 5: Sun protection - the single most important step

If you could only use one product, make it sunscreen. This isn't an exaggeration - dermatologists worldwide agree that UV radiation is the biggest cause of premature skin ageing.

The rules:

  • Use at least SPF 30, every day, all year round
  • Yes, even in winter. Yes, even when it's cloudy. UVA rays penetrate clouds and glass
  • Apply a sufficient amount: two finger-widths for your entire face
  • Reapply every two hours if you're outdoors for extended periods

Which type to choose?

  • Chemical filters (lightweight, transparent, ideal under makeup)
  • Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide - better tolerated by sensitive skin)
  • Hybrid formulas (the best of both worlds)

Modern sunscreens are no longer thick, white paste. There are lightweight, tinted formulas that feel like a day cream.

Bonus tips for your morning routine

What you DON'T need to do in the morning

  • Exfoliate - Save AHAs and BHAs for the evening
  • Retinol - This is an evening product (it breaks down under UV light)
  • Heavy oils - Save rosehip oil and other heavy oils for nighttime

Timing

Your entire routine shouldn't take more than 5-7 minutes. That's less time than your average Instagram scrolling session.

Consistency over perfection

The best skincare product is the one you actually use. A simple routine you stick to every day does more than a complicated 10-step plan you abandon after two weeks.

Start today

You don't need to get everything perfect straight away. Start with the basics - cleanser, moisturiser, SPF - and build from there. On your next visit to the pharmacy, ask about a skin analysis or personalised advice. Many Belgian pharmacists offer this for free and can tell you exactly which products suit your skin type.

Your skin ten years from now will thank you.
